What leadership roles and/or volunteer experiences have you had?
I contribute to the community that I am apart of in two specific ways. I am in a Justice for D.C. Youth program on campus. This program is a mentoring program for young men who are in a detention facility called New Beginnings. The facility is about 20 minutes from campus. I am chairperson for the events committee so once a month we go into the facility and participate in an event that focuses around political activism. Along with the political aspect we also interact with the young men who have no positive role models in their lives. I love this program because I am able to be a resource to the young men and give them encouraging words through this difficult time in their lives The young men are between ages 16-19. They are still young and have a lot of potential. I am a good role model to show them that they can still go to college and be anything that they want to be, they just have to be determined and motivated. Another community service event program that I am involved in is through my honors society for public and community health. Through the organization SOME (So others might eat), which is a community based organization that helps the poor and homeless people of D.C., we serve lunch to those less fortunate who cannot afford a meal. Being able to help out with such an important event makes me feel really good. I am proud to be able to help people who really need it and those who appreciate my efforts.
What is your favorite campus setting and why?
My favorite campus setting is the Stamp Student Union. There are many different programs and activites occuring in the Union on a daily basis. I can catch a movie in the Hoff or grab a quick lunch on my way to class. I really appreciate the fact that students have a place like the Union to go to.
What has your scholarship meant to you or enabled you to do?
I am really grateful and appreciative of the scholarship that I have received to participate in the Alternative Winter Break in Knoxville, TN. The scholarship has allowed me the opportunity to go on this trip to learn more and experience first hand the effects of Domestic Violence. I am excited to dedicate my time and effort to helping in any way that I can.
