Sidney Brower International Travel Endowed Scholarship in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation

The opportunity to travel, to experience different cultures, to live in intense urban contexts, and to engage in the history of foreign lands can be a life-changing experience for students. The Sidney Brower International Travel Endowed Scholarship in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation supports community planning graduate students who will present at an international conference or take a curriculum-related class in a foreign country.

The late Sidney Brower established the Sidney Brower International Travel Scholarship in 2011, and it was endowed through the generous support of Cynthia Brower and contributions from friends and family after his passing in 2020. From 1979 to 2011, Sidney Brower taught in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at the University of Maryland, College Park and later held the title of professor emeritus. Professor Brower encouraged students to view the world from varied historical and cultural perspectives. He led numerous seminars to his native South Africa, where his students produced studies and reports that were of practical use to local governments and planning agencies.
